Yuusuke’s Alumalith custom build by LaRon

the custom build part of the biz is where the name “Ron’s Bikes” came from — but ironically it is what I have the least amount of time for these days. I will admit, even when I did have the time, this sort of process still took a lot longer than just plugging stock pieces together. it takes time to curate, and I need to be feeling it in order to get in the searching, ordering, and building zone. often times you can cross off all those barriers, and still one little thing will get in the way of completion, and the bike sits in the stand waiting for inspiration to return.

well this one took me a while, and luckily the customer was a real dream to work with. super patient and respectful of my time — well most all of our customers are (thanks!). not sure if it is just my communication and work style that attracts patient and respectful self sufficient folks like this (there were 500 of them at the Nutmeg Nor’Easter this year), or if our little corner of bike lifestyle humanity are indeed this cool. both I presume.

that Paul pewter matches the XTR and our tires so well!

so here are a few shots of one I have been piecing together at the right times since May really. well maybe I didn’t start on it until June/July, but all that matter is that is is done! now time to take it apart and carefully package into a box bound for Japan!

XTR m952 and specialized flag cranks. flag cranks are among the prettiest IMO, and you already know my affinity for m952
kore aheadlite stem with a yellowbird threadworks stem cap made locally in chester CT
trying to get a line on these grips from Taiwan
brooks b17 special and ritchey classic post king cages etc.
and there you have it!

thanks and hope you had a nice weekend everyone ::::

XO Ronnie

This is a beauty. Will you be building more Alumaliths in the Spring, and how can I reach you to talk about customizing?

Re: the grips. When I saw them I figured this was a forth coming Ultradynamico unit. Then I dug around and found the BLB Brick Lane Bikes Get Shorty grips which look just like the retrospec grips from SGV but are only available from UK and European vendors and don’t appear to be offered in gray. https://www.bricklanebikes.co.uk/blb-get-shorty-grips-sky-blue The hunt continues. Hope this helps solve the mystery.

The all silver build reminds me of my beloved 1993 Dyno Compe, sadly stolen around 1997. Lovely!

Really nice looking build Ronnie. I have purchased some Oury grips recently that are identical to the ones you’re looking for. I got them here (https://www.thebikesmiths.com/products/oury-grips-v1?_pos=2&_sid=0f2c4bf8e&_ss=r&variant=37610889740448) but it looks like they might be out of silver.

hi Peter — the oury grips are too smooshy and tacky for my tastes, and these have triangles to match the tires! gotta keep looking for them… thanks for the suggestion though.

Those seem to be Retrospec All-Star Trianglegrips. They come in gray as well. https://sgvbicycles.com/products/black-all-star-grips-html
Another not so bad option is Ame Tristar mtb grips in gray.

What bottom bracket did you use?
Nice looking build and thanks for sharing.
My frame should be showing up tomorrow so I’m getting inspiration.

Hi Eric! awesome! we used a 122 73 shell UN-300 on this. you can go to 118 if not using a triple. I included some sand paper for your headset instal as the chrome is a little thick on the steerer. here is the video tutorial! https://youtu.be/mk3rvbi-BMI
