Rivendell Atlantis 2 customer build

Hi folks! 3rd customer Atlantis build in 3 months. This one is a “2”, and is pre long chain stays. Waterford built. the “1” was Toyo Japan. I have had all three, but could not choose what one is best. the shorter chain stays dooooo look the part IMO though.

this one was purchased by customer off the ibob list, ended up being in New Haven, so Arya picked it up over the summer, and it has been waiting in the wings were parts to trickle in. nothing is straightforward, even on these straightforward looking builds — the flow has to flow, and of course the drivetrain must shift!

The customer provided these mint mafac cantis. What a brake. What a looker and stopper. I figured a 50mm tire looks best in this bike, so went with some non UD tires since we don’t offer one in that size …. yet. Handlebars are some Nitto Albatross bars that I bent outwards in my vice to give them a little more leverage.

velocity Atlas rims, classic. Riv rear hub and a SON dynamo in the front. 36h. Thats a lot of spokes these days!

IRD levers, OURY brown grips to match the earth palette here. of course a tan waxed clap trap bag.

8 speed 11-34 in the rear.

mircodrive 20t – 30t – 44t up front. that is quite the range if I do say so myself. 8 speed KMC X8 chain.

have a nice weekend!

    Very cla$$¥ !!

It’s cool seeing cinturatos on a spiffy build. French tires to match the French saddle.

Very nice build. FWIW, the Atlantis 2 was either Toyo or Waterford depending on the year and value of the USD. The Atlantis 1 was a pre-Rivendell bike. A Bridgestone make, I think (or maybe Panasonic).

can’t recommend the Berthoud stuff enough. top notch quality, and thick leather. takes a little longer to break in, but will really be with you for near life. and cool points for being French

Great build, indeed. And I have to agree, the shorter stay versions of the Atlantis just look so much better than the current one.

I know what you mean. I am building up a new Sam Hillborne for a customer right now though, and it is pretty dang close to this. just a little shorter axle to crown, but you could certainly mimmic this exact build, 50mm tires and all. and it has “short” chain stays still.
