’96 Riv customer custom

not my best photo set — but I forgot to take these glam shots, and the customer was right there picking up the bike mid day, so I had to make due with the dapples

“Dick Hardman” was the previous owner. when I asked the customer where he got it, he replied “a 75 year old very normal looking guy”. Hope ol’ Richard is still a Hardman

its a nice Rivendell Custom from ’96. Customer was inspired by an orange Roadini build I did from my neighbor a few winters ago, so I leaned into the warm tones contrasting on the silver and grey. nice lugs on these!

spec’d some high flange hubs and some vintage campy skewers on velocity quill rims. 700×33 cava race tires.

campy ergo 10 to Shimano 8. that’s a brand new made in 2025 TA pro vis crank. 46×30 with 11-32 in the rear.

Shimano BRR600 mid reach calipers

nose is way high! a very snobby bike — should have fixed that for the photo — hadn’t sized the customer on it yet. well okay! hope you enjoyed.

LOL, I bought all of Mr. Hardman’s Rivendell Readers and catalogs. Still delighted by seeing his name on the address labels.

    Great build as always.

@Thomas: The TA cranks suck up more square taper spindle than ISO cranks so I think going wider is normal. There’s the added advantage of finessing some super low Q-factor if you can hit the sweet spot. I just installed a 46/30 TA crankset with TA rings on a Raleigh International. Had to go with a 118mm to get the rings to clear the chainstays. 113mm was too short.

That saddle looks well within the range of how people set their saddles. In any case a bit erect seems appropriate for a Dick Hardman bicycle. Nice job. The best part about the older Rivs like this one is you often get thinned lugs. With the production bikes today, that doesn’t happen. (All my Rivendells are tigged or fillet-brazed, so no worries here!; ^) –mr

very sweet build. I’m building up a Waterford made Rivendell Hillborne right now. I’m going with a black and gray theme and I have some gray Hudz that I’m using. I love steeling your ideas Ron. Thanks for all your help when I email.

DAMN!!! Need a cold shower after seeing that!
That would definitely win a saddle-sniffer award if it makes an appearance at Nutmeg!
