early November in Nutmeg Country

this week I just want to post a few riding photos from the past few weeks because I think the changing of the seasons here in New England are pretty fun indeed.

we’ve had some exceptionally crispy weather for over 2 months now … can’t remember the last non sunny day we’ve had … think it was back in August.

Deetz broke his arm a few weeks ago getting doored in NYC … Bawlz has been putting in big miles every week in his honor. we all are. in honor of Deetz!

ive got some new stomplox running/hiking/biking shoes that I helped develop. they are made in Japan and we (Mamiya and myself) are going to have to crowd fund for them. more details in a week or so.

Namz Tenzin is on the bike again after taking much of the summer off. she was on the bike maybe once a week for a few months — but now she is back to daily jaunts — sometimes with me. she has always been an exceptional bike handler, and she loves the rough stuff — fitness is kinda just there, which must be nice!

the barn is pretty much done with phase one. those steel doors will look nice once they get some nice rust. now I am just moving stuff inside and trying to organize well for the 15th try in my life.

not ready to fully reveal the inside, but here is Jay building some wheels for the 5 Alumax’s I have in the build queue, and another shot of the outside. new life for a 250 year old building!

back to that nice weather. here is a scene from last saturday riding down to the beach in old saybrook.

we always stop for lunch at our bird sanctuary cove on saybrook point. did you know this is one of the earliest euro settlements in the nation? founded by “Puritan Lords and Gentlemen” in 1635.

some leaves still clinging to some trees up in East Haddam. those are gone now though. everywhere you look you can see deeper into the forest. I rather like that about this time of year.

some trails are already mulched in like the one on Case Mountain. Joe Hubba and I did 23 miles of single track here last sunday. need to make that a monthly outing.

we’ve got a big mountain bike ride/race tomorrow here in East Haddam benefiting the Land Trust. love how the XC MTB scene is growing around here again!

I have my crust malocchio up and running again on some prototype cava 33 robustos. the cava 33 race tires are really only a fat road tire, and they are very good at that — so light — so flexible. too light for sharp things you encounter on non paved surfaces though. these robustos make it so I can make it through sections like this with my anus more relaxed.

ferry is still running for another 3 weeks. then it will be time to get the off season canoe out so I can make these crossings on the regular. saves me 45 minutes and a few significant climbs over going around on the swing bridge.

oh yah I did have a photo of the inside of the barn. still getting set up obvs. likely always will be. okay, thats all!

XO RR

I always come back for the photos on your blog – a question about the GRIII/GRIIIx that you keep in the pocket on your bikes – have you ever had one of them fail due to the vibration/shocks from riding?

I have a GRIII that I rather carry in a hip pack for that reason – the rattling of what I assume to be the image stabilizer in the camera body makes me worry that it might get damaged from repeated shocks when carried up front. I guess I’m overthinking it!

thanks for liking the photos — I do enjoy taking them. good question about the GR there — they can take a beating though. my IIIx spent the first 3 years of it’s life in a loose fitting stem bag and got the shake weight rock tumbling treatment. even jettisoned out of the pocket a few times — i am a bit better about it these days and cary it on my body for the most part .. its certainly no spring chicken, but proven to be a durable camera and what I use most days.

tidings Tom — we plan to have robusto 33 cavas in a few months, and they will fit that frame just fine. you might even be able to do the 38 without fenders.

Great pics, drove through that area on Columbus Day weekend on the way back from a family funeral in Massachusetts. I stopped at the Hadlyme Church cemetery which I see is in the background of one of your pics to visit some ancestors graves. I also visited another old cemetery up the road which contains more ancestors called Second Cemetery which is in the woods on the property of the Ray of Light Farm Animal Rescue. I hope to make it to one of your events at some point however difficult it may be to get out of working on Saturdays at a bike shop.

how cool! that second cemetery is a haunting place when the fog settles down there in the best ways. cool you have some ancestors buried in such old places!

Just fitted some 30 mm Conti’s (fit more like 28) on my 1993 Gazelle Champion Mondial. Didn’t think it would make such a difference! It’s like having double suspension (frame with lugs and a curved fork), so comfortable. And fast too! I’m afraid the 33 Cava isn’t going to fit. You are such an inspiration!
