Greg’s Alumax build

catching up on customer builds this autumn as the traveling cools down, and my focus returns. one such customer build is the typical carte blanche Ron’s build on a Rons Bike. this particular one is headed out to LA as a fast grav bike with style…. in style ….

went with Campy 11 on an Ultegra 11 speed 11-34 with a 44-29 double up front. making doubles out of triples is fun and engaging. you all also note that I used a 31.8 clamp on the handlebars …. they are nitto, so thats okay — and the matching nitto “gravel stem”. how fun. the positive rise is nice for folks wanting their handlebars up with their saddle.

that crankset is sucked in on a 102mm Italian taper spindle. an old trick from Sheldon to narrow the Q and set up a good chain line when using mountain bike cranks on a 68 bb shell. sometimes you don’t need to — but these XT cranks require it, and so do their suntour friends from the same era. and I love how the spindle disappears and makes the crank arms look integrated. 3 sheets of paper clearance. 👌🏼 — there is a record bb under there — smoothest in the game.

Giles Berthound ti saddle with matching leather bar tape. loved working with this tape — and the feel is luxury. went with ano green and brass stuff to bring in the brassy bits on the saddle and ultradynamico Rosé 700×42 JFF sidewalls, and the green in the Rons logo.

thinking I should have used a matching locally made top cap with those bar end plugs — but I also think restraint is good with these things. okay enough words, ill let the photos do the rest!

have a nice weekend!

XO RR

Hi there, really grateful for the bb-hack. Can you fully torque the crank bolt down with the Record BB? With my Token-BB the Bottom of the right side crank arm touches the sealing when I give the bolt high torque. I’m trying less torque and keeping an eye on it for now.

Hi, yes it should. try the narrowest English spindle you can find (generally a 102-103) first, but if you want or need to bring them in even closer to the shell, then try the Italian spindle trick.

Beautiful details! I love the color choice on the fork, it looks great with all the silver components …is that a RAL color?

nice build, super happy to read about the BB hack for the cranks as I had a plan to run m737 XT on my all road bike that is being fabricated soon.
