custom alumax flat bar grav

here is another ALUMAX ALUMINUS MAXIMUS custom customer build for you with the standard fork. First “flat bar” build. Customer suggested the Crust Loose Bar by nitto. happened to have one in the bar bin already, so that went well. it is my size and all, so I’ve gotten to ride it around to test various bolt tightness — and I gotta say i like the bars. fun to think with these 700×45 Rosé rubbers, that this is a verrrry capable fast and comfy off roader, especially with those chonky velocity cliffhanger rims.

I have my own little way of adding a “clutch” to these old derailleurs. its just enough generally. Luckily these frames have that little fender mount tucked away on the seat stays to anchor the “clutch spring”. Gearing is 29-44 up front and 11-34 in the rear. 9 speed.

couldn’t help adding some heat ano to the post. tired for cheetah spots.

okay I have 2 more custom builds nearly done in the queue coming up!

You’ve master frames, now you should make cranks and repop those Ritchey logic compacts so I can stop looking on ebay every 30 minutes for some 170s…

Prior to the invention of the clutch derailleur, in order to add more spring tension, we used to open up the derailleur knuckle and drill a new hole for the P-screw, further back in the receiver than its previous setting. This required winding up the derailleur a bit more on reassembly, and probably wore the spring out faster, but it was an effective way to limit chain slap on an XT rear derailleur in 2002.

Hybrids are finally having their heyday. While I personally am more of a roadie than anything, I do hope things stay like this for as long as possible. There’s no need to chase a drop bar for looks. I would love to see 1×9 or 2×9 hybrids with canti or v-brakes in stores again. Most people don’t need much more than that, and cheap as chips.

Beautiful build! What iteration of XTR shifters are those?

You have me looking for some of those Ritchey cranks and those TA rings. So good on your builds.

Would an inner tube perhaps work as a budget alt to the clutch spring? Feel like I’ve seen that somewhere 🤔 Aaand the ano home job is very nice, do you just go to town with a blowtorch for a lil bit?

Lovely looking build, tho I’m a lil biased as my weird proportions struggle to get along with drops!

thanks glad you like — that spring is used as a little clutch. helps just enough, and also makes the larger 34t gear run a little smoother.
