Rons Bikes CR1 Country Road Bike

unveiled a year ago to the acclaim of critics and civilians alike, I would like to reintroduce my mid reach caliper “all road” bike for your consideration. imagine this bike powder coated if you can … imagine going out for a fast road ride and not wincing at a dirty connecter track that keeps you away from traffic. imagine a bike that you can ride all day on and be comfortably sprung along by the long seat post and plump tires. immmmmagine 🔮

these bikes were at first going to be a collaboration betwixt rons and beach club, but after a year of irreconcilable disagreements on water bottle placement, the project dried up — and now its been fully absorbed by the LaRon conglomerate.

^above are some of the mid reach road team bikes we made for our local cycling club. Darren weighing the fork. sub 700g. frames are about 1450-1530g

excited to be working with Darren Larkin of Larkin cycles just 5 miles across the CT river. Darren has built a lot of bikes for other companies over the past decade while living in California. We are so lucky to have him as a nutmeg country transplant. cheers to this being the first batch of many made by Darren for LaRon.

what is so special about this road bike? nothing, and that is what makes it special. the deign approach is nothing extra. road bikes can be the simplest form of geared bike if you let them be themselves. that being said, the sleek lines of the CR1 lend itself to both modern and classic build interpretations.

the CR1 is built around modern forward seated body position– so there is a steeper seat tube angle and longer front center. both the alumax and evoo share similar geo principles. most notably, you will note the generous tire clearances. designed around 700×33-700x39mm tires. 300×39 pictured. if you didn’t know, my tire brand Ultradynamico sells both 😉

^here is a spy shot of Troy and Balls Nutmeg Team bikes with the 700×33. gonna be hot builds! troy says his is right at 17lbs without the chain and cables. the Nutmeg team decal are only for locals, sorry. you should move here though!

this is what the down tube will say in various colors. and there is a Larkin cycles head tube badge.

as far as colors go, we will get into those options when some bikes are finished. likely will be offering 2 color choices and raw. the price reflected includes powder coat. if you want yours raw, thats fine — and you’ll save 150 bucks. but again, we will get into that in a few months.

there are a number of mid reach caliper brakes out there to chose from. I know for sure that the TRP RG957 are really nice and clear the 700×39, also the Shimano BR R600. that is what I am using here under all that road salt. the VO grand cru brakes also. you are looking for 47-57mm of arm there. caliper brakes are simple, light, easy to set up and maintain, and for road bikes, they work great. the medium reach veriaties are still plenty stiff, and offer fantastic braking in my experiences in both new England and Arizona. maybe/likley on a long rainy descent in the PNW you’d be wishing for your deli slicer discs, but overall if you survive that rainy descent, you will appreciate marvel that is the lowly dual pivot caliper brake.

speaking of rain, I considered fender mounts on this bike — but I don’t want the clutter — so, no fender mounts, sorry!

quick specs:

  • 27.2 seatpost
  • 1 inch and an 8th straight head tube
  • 68 English BB shell
  • 29-30.0 seatpost and front der clamp
  • clearance for up to 700×39 tires
  • production will have downtube shifter stops
  • external cable routing
  • 130 rear spacing 100 front
  • pump peg for full length frame pump
  • 2 water bottle cages (placed where iiii want)
  • Columbus tubing
  • made in Deep River CT
  • lead time after pre order closes 4-6 months.
  • deposit taken now, the rest due at shipping.
  • FIT available in 5 sizes. this is sloping geo, so the top tube length is what you should be looking at. and that tt is supposed to fit you on the longer side with a shorter stem.

you can pre order these now on RONSBIKES.COM until we sell through the batch

okay let me know any questions in the comments!

I’d like one of these with cantilever brakes because here in the PNW it gets real wet and those PAULS MINI-MOTO brakes are stronger than discs with a Campy lever, like wow. Also because my name is also Ron and that would look cool.

Dear Ron, I have ordered 58, which is on smaller size for me. Now I am reading “this is sloping geo, so the top tube length is what you should be looking at. and that tt is supposed to fit you on the longer side with a shorter stem.”

Is there a way to trade the 58 to 60cm with someone?

Do you ride 60cm? I am 6 3 but shorter legs, Stumpjumper duralcan XL fit me however.

I think you and I would have similar proportions. I could do the 60, but it’s pretty big — I opted for a racier 58. still has a 58 tt, so fits more like a trad 59/60, whereas the 60 fits like a 62. send me over an email if you have other questions, but I think you chose wisely

Love the idea of these bikes and I have a set of BR-600s kicking around. Would be curious to hear how the ride is similar/different to some of your other road bikes, like the Malocchio, CAAD, and Grandis. Maybe even a comparison with a Roadini!

The lack of comments about the frame/fork weight…I don’t know if people realize how rare this sort of steel frame is in any context, modern or vintage, for such a reasonable price.

I’m a fan of the design, keeping things tight. Every braze-on makes the bottom line harder, but I do miss the fender mounts. But for fenders, pclips ain’t bad.

For mid reach shimano brakes, you’ve read this thread? Comprehensive list of which come with what kind of bearings/washers.

Can compressionless brake housing be used on this frame?

    Like

    1. coolultraromance1598 Avatar

yes it can — most notably the jagwire and nokon beaded housing. —- not full length housing though. if it worked in 2010 for road bikes, it still works on this bike generally

Cool bike. I for one appreciate the short head tube on the larger frames. There don’t seem to be many steel bikes aimed for multiple road surfaces that have a head tube under a foot long. I have carefully cut down steel head tubes before with a hacksaw.

I agree with you — there is a time and place for a tall head tube — but I encourage folks to set these up a little more spirited

hello! glad you are digging your sir Al Maximus! the wheels I have on the CR1 pictured are velocity quills laced to dura ace 7700 hubs. the 700c crust rim brake rims are always a great option too for something a liiiiiitle bit wider. the carbon rims on the team bikes are from Light Bicycle. readily available.

it looks like a cross bike with a low bb. Pretty cool. I am normally a 54 but the head tube seems a bit short?

thinking about bringing stack up 15mm. attempting to use minimal frame materials and take it up with the stem angle. maybe too presumptuous

Hello! Small rider here (5’2″), wondering if I can make the size 52 work. Feeling left out 😦

    1. coolultraromance1598 Avatar

hello! this would depend on leg length mostly. if you send me an email over with a few measurements I can tell you for sure. let me know your saddle height from center of bb to top of saddle, and your measurement from center of saddle to center of the handlebars. ronnie@ronsbikes.com

      cheers!

Do you have any sizing recommendations? The blog reads like you should size up and use a shorter stem, but the reach is already quite a bit longer than typical. Thanks!

    Like

    1. coolultraromance1598 Avatar

hello! I should change the language then as you’d want to stick with your current size and just plan on shortening the stem a bit. I run a 130 on typical road geo, and can go down to a 110/120 on this. so stem length should be your only fit adjustment really — remember the steeper ST angle will bring your forward to, so you won’t feel the full length of that TT. cheers!

Awesome! I love the idea of a largely future proof bike with the clearance to handle some “supple” rubber. Also very interested to see builds from the nutmeg squad, especially those 24 hole carbon rims, hard to come by these days.

the nutmeg builds are really hot. even have one of them with those Princeton carbon works Richard Sachs wheels. the carbon rims in the photos of this post are readily available from light bicycle. they come highly recommended. these rims were built up with tune hubs for a 1450g wheel build.

I started bugging you about a year ago about this bike. It’s about time! I started shopping breaks right after you posted this bike last year and have been holding onto the Shimano BR R600. By the way a hard break to come by. Looks like I need to look at the geo’s and put my order in. I’m so happy it has come together.

l see that the brake pads are in different locations in relation to the slots. Are they going to be at the bottom of the slot front and rear? Mid-point front and rear? Or like shown in the pics?

good eye and question. as you can see on my sample we failed to account for the fork rake changing the axle to brake mount measurement. we amended that on the red team bikes and final geometry so that the clearance is maximized like the rear. ill get some photos of how much headroom Joe’s red team bike has with the 700×39. cheers!
