2023 Nutmeg Nor’Easter important info pt1

registration open at ronsbikes.com

hello there! we are nearly ready to start the planning process for the 7th annual World Championships of Alt Cycling! This a landing page for folks who are getting antsy for an I.V. drip of info, so without further ado :::: I N F O R M A T I O N 💉

map of deer lake

Location: Dear Lake Camp in Killingworth CT , a cllllassssic 253 acre New England Norman Rockwell setting.

Camp Options: lots of em this year. there are Cabins and bunk houses on the premises, lean-to shelters, tent camping, and car camping zones. camp sites and bunk cabins are first come first serve on Friday starting at 3pm

Getting there: from NYC the metro north to New Haven, transfer to shoreline east to Clinton. Dear Lake is 5 pleasant miles from the station. Roll on bike service and all. could do the same from Boston I suppose. you can always drive too — there will be plenty of parking, but we always like to not have tooooo many cars involved. if flying, Bradley International Airport is an hour drive.

Why this date every year?: this is the weekend when the last fall foliage of New England reaches it’s peak — a farewell in many ways.

Yard Sale Swa(m)p meet: it’s free to bring your stuff you want to sell — bikes, parts, wooden spoons, etc. There will be a special designated covered area for this part of the event.

Classes: so far there is one on carving wooden tire levers. if you have a course you’d like to teach, then reach out to Arya@nutmegneedleworks.com

Food: our olde friends Fire in the Kitchen will be tossing apizza pies for the 7th year in a row on Saturday night. we will have a food truck of sorts for Friday night and Saturday morning too. there are grocery stores nearby in both Madison CT and Clinton CT. There will be camp fires and your camp stoves to cook other things and make coffee etc.

Coffee: any baristas want to set up? let me know

Weather: the last few years have been Cracker Jack 60-70 F and sunny with Southern New England fall foliage at its absolute peak gloriousness. that being said, it can also be a deluge as Hurricane Season lasts longer into the year these days…

Rain Date?: geez I don’t know yet ….

Toilets: there are a whole lot of them on the premises

Water: there is potable well water at site

Showers: bring some wet wipes! there are also showers on the premises, and a lake to dunk in.

Kid Friendly?: no kids, sorry.

e-bikes: no ebikes, sorry. the trails do not allow them in the area.

Routes: there will be 3-5 of them ranging from an easy country road spin with a stop at the beach to rugged class 4 roads and lots of trail that you might think is hiking trail because it is. I will post the routes the week before the event along with the suggested tire size.

Aid stations: there will be no aid stations or external support once you leave the venue location. the gpx routes will be enriched with waypoints showing you where to get water and food while you are out, but you are on your own for the most part.

Navigation: highly recommend a head unit or some way to strap your phone to your handlebar as the courses will not be marked, and there are a lot of turns and easy ways to get really turned around out there.

Registration: OPEN NOW!

keep checking back here as this blog is the official info page for the event.

hope everyone is having a good Labor Day!

I have one registration for camp and/or ride, but won’t be able to make the trip up to CT. If anyone is interested in this registration, send me an email at mcbibob@gmail.com and we can figure something out.

I’m coming from Brooklyn by train. The limiting train schedule here is the CT commuter train from New Haven to Clinton: there is a gap in service on Friday from 9am to 3:55pm. This means the earliest you can arrive at Clinton is 4:24pm. The corresponding MNR to New Haven train out of Grand Central is 1:34pm.

If you just punch it “Arrive By 3:00pm” you’ll be told to leave at like, 4:30am.

its a bummer — ridership is down to only 30 percent of the pre pandemic numbers, so they are unfortunately making more and more cuts.

Just went to register today and it’s showing sold out 😦 any chance of more spots being added? maybe variations for cabin/camp/car-sleeping options?

whoops, give it another try — pizza is indeed sold out and so is the yard sale option, but ride and camp we have a few slots left. cheers!

I was wondering the same thing. I have been trying to rustle up a group of friends to come from Providence, Rhode Island. It is showing sold out. We’d be just camping – obviously would love pizza too but we can live without it. We can also do camping only, without needing car parking. This seems like the kind of thing where space is infinite and nothing sells out? Is there space for us to camp – happy with bike only space, we don’t need much.

hello there! pizza is sold out, but you can still select the ride/camp option. we only have 10 spots left and will be closing by tomorrow most likely, so I would suggest getting tickets today. cheers!

This looks terrific! Might there be a 40-60 mile route that is suited for a 51 year old all-rounder bike that maxes out at a 32mm slick tire and whose rider is not seeking hike-a-bike experiences? Thank you!

Hi-ho Ronnie-O! If we drive up from out of state and all the car camping spots are claimed, will there be a place to park our vehicle? Thanks!

hello there! yes, we have plenty of parking spots for everyone, so no prob with that — and more info to come if just sleeping in your car at your parking spot is permitted

HONEY, you can’t say “Lake to jump in” under the SHOWERS section just yet. We need to confirm this is allowed with Jenn first. SMH.

Camping and/or bunking is included in our registration, yeah? And folks should come prepared for a variety of sleeping options, depending on what is available when they arrive? Just double checking that there is no step 2 after registering, to reserve a bunk or whatever.

Just happened to notice this — did you contact Crust about it? That really shouldn’t happen, and they might be able to help you get repaired and ridin’ again. Good luck!!

Hiya Ron, been watching the event from afar out here in Washington state since year one. We’ve always wanted to join the ramble but distance logistics stifle. We do a little something similar in our neck going on its 6th year. Saw your bookmark about a coffee sponsor and we’d be jazzed to support. I have a coffee roasting biz on the Olympic Peninsula and one of our coffee labels (Freewheel) is actually inspired by Fab himself. I’d be stoked to send some beans for your roll if you’re still pondering. Cheers, Nick

Hello! We will always take coffee donations, but we are really looking for some sort of coffee cart to come and do some espresso drinks and what not to compliment the large vats of industrial coffee that will be available —

I’m going to ask my friend Buck if he’s interested. He runs Coffee Mob in NYC, roasts and sources everything himself, *and* occasionally bikepacks. ~Kyle from Boulder

Hoping that I some day will be able to leave the diabolical depths of the Scandinavian coniferous forests to once enjoy the light and autumnal splendor of New England. Not this year though. Ride like there’s no tomorrow!
